From the Desk of the Principal

August 2021

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The first day of school is quickly approaching.  The administration and staff of Salem High School are working diligently to open our school during this continuing COVID 19 pandemic.  As we prepare for the first day on Friday, September 3, 2021, we resolve to make your student’s education, health, and well-being our priority.

Based on the most recent information provided to us by the NJDOE Road Forward document and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), we will continue with the following student protocols:

Face Covering:

First and foremost, all staff and students must wear proper face mask and practice social distancing when possible, while on campus.

Symptom Checker:

By 7:15 am each morning, all students and staff must continue to complete the symptom checker survey. Students and staff who have not completed the survey will not be allowed entry into the building. This year, we are utilizing your student’s school email account to provide them with the daily survey (please see enclosed document).

Student Entry/ Reporting to School:

Our first day of school is Friday, September 3rd.  Please inform your student that the school building does not open until 7:30 am each morning.  In order to maintain social distancing, students are to gain entry into the building at the following locations:

9th grade                  Main doors at the front of the school

10th grade                Band room doors located in B-Wing East

11th grade                 Gymnasium/Cafeteria doors located in B-Wing West

12th grade                 Senior Patio Door Entrance

Assigned administration and staff will monitor each location.  Staff will only allow students entry into the building who were cleared by the symptom checker. If your student had an issue with the survey, please have them report to the main entrance to see an administrator.

Once students have entered the building, they will report directly to their homeroom.  To reduce movement in the hallways, homeroom is also your student’s first period class.  During homeroom, students will be provided with breakfast and listen to morning announcements.  Students will not be assigned a locker.

We are utilizing three lunch periods again this year in order to socially distance the students.  The cafeteria, gymnasium, and senior patio will provide adequate spacing to accomplish proper social distancing.  Metz Culinary Services will implement proper protocol and procedures for food delivery.

Additional Personal Safety Protocols:

When signing out a student, parent/guardian will come to the front entrance to complete the sign out form and student will be retrieved from the classroom for dismissal.

In addition to the above mentioned procedures, students will be responsible for their own personal sanitizing by using the following district supplied materials: hand sanitizing stations outside every classroom, soap and water available in all lavatories and identified classrooms, disinfectant wipes for desks, chairs, computers, etc.  Water fountains are not in use and students can bring their own water bottle.  Hallway traffic flow will be followed in one direction.  Signs will be posted.

Close Contact:

In the event your student has been identified as a close contact, you will need to notify the nurse of your student’s vaccination status.  Per CDC/DOH guidance, the following will occur based on your student’s status:

  • Unvaccinated: Quarantine can end after Day 10* without testing and if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring.
  • Vaccinated: People who are fully vaccinated do NOT need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms.

*After day 7 after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later)
