CLAYTON -- Following a disappointing loss to South Jersey, Group 1 rival Pitman last week, the Clayton field hockey team rattled off its third consecutive victory in convincing fashion on Wednesday with a 4-0 triumph over Salem.

Beginning with a goal by Isabelle Montanus, the Clippers scored early and often in the first half, dominating possession and getting on the board within three minutes of the opening whistle.

The Clippers (10-2-2) continued to control play and tacked on another pair of goals in the seven-minute span that followed, scored by Kelli Moore and Ceciley Joynes, respectively.

Clayton head coach Jenn Schoepflin was pleased with the team’s performance.

“I think everybody was moving,” Schoepflin said. “There was good passing and there was aggressiveness in the circle.”

The winning side added their final tally late in the first half, off the stick of Allie Reuter, to take a 4-0 lead it would not relinquish. Jones added an assist, as did Francesca Shipe and Natalie Warner.

Despite the strong offensive performance, the Clippers focused on the defensive side of the game in recent practices.

“We were working on our defense for this game,” Schoepflin said. “Making sure we recover back in the midfield, and from there, attacking strong in the circle and cutting to the ball.”

Joynes reiterated what her coach has been preaching.

“Low block tackles, doubling and getting back on defense,” Joynes said.

“(Coach Schoepflin told us) we had to play our hardest the whole game and that we couldn't give up,” Moore said. “We have to finish through the game.”

Clayton registered 17 shots on net, while their netminder, Zoe Lee, needed only one save to earn the shutout.

Tiasia Tatem made 13 saves for Salem.
